Escrow Services: ICANN-mandated backup copy
ICANN insists that each registry escrow its data in case of failure, whether technical or financial. They want to make sure of two things: first, that in case things go south, registrants are protected, and second, that if they decide to give the delegation to someone else, they have the data to make it possible.
